Not a "silent night"

It certainly wasn't a "silent night" when the faithful duly came to enjoy a night of carols and festive music-making at Gateacre's 2018 Christmas Concert.

A typical bleak mid-winter's evening was duly brightened by the Gateacre orchestra's rendition of "O Holy Night" along with impressive solo performances from GCSE Music students Gabrielle Brittles ("A Spaceman Came Travelling"), Caoimhe Quinn ("Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"), Amy Figueira with our year 7 backing singers ("Do You Hear What I Hear?"), Charley Brown-Eaton (a swinging "Santa Baby") and Georgia Johnson ("Underneath The Tree").

Many reckoned that our Sinatra-inspired Gat Pack might have a catchy festive hit on their hands with the Mr. Wheatcroft-penned "25th Day" while the Gateacre Jazz Band provided an impressive big-band take on Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song" featuring a stunning vocal from A-Level music student, Sophie Roberts. Another A-Level singer, Lauren White, gave us an emotional reading of Joni Mitchell's beautiful piano ballad, "River".

Year 9 band, the Lunar Witches, augmented by Samba drums, delivered a powerful version of Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" while the Senior Singers produced a lovely "Christmas Eve".

Our comperes, Freya Barnes and Brian Comer provided an impressive array of seasonal one-liners as well as encouraging the audience to lend their voices to a selection of traditional carols including "Away In A Manger" and "O Come All Ye Faithful".

The concert concluded with the by now traditional sing-along finale of Slade's evergreen classic, "Merry Xmas Everybody" led by compere Brian. The audience departed into the dark December night with their spirits lifted by another memorable Gateacre concert!
