Carol Concert

On a very bleak midwinter, students, teachers and parents alike gathered for Gateacre’s annual Christmas concert. The audience was treated to the usual favourites: readings; communal carols and the Gateacre Orchestra, who started off proceedings with Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

The first half was a musically diverse one, ranging from pop music (The Year 7 choir enthusiastically singing Arianna Grande’s Santa Tell Me), to Jamie-Lei Dennett’s jazzy rendition of You’re a Mean One Mr Grinch and Ollie Switzer’s confident rock vocal in Ms Believer. An upbeat Amy Figueira more than did justice to Leona Lewis’s One More Sleep, and was a fitting way to end the first half.

The second half was no less musically varied, commencing with an extremely professional Year 11 band backing Makenzie Hayes’ soulful voice in Cryin’ Christmas Tears – a rarely-heard blues track by Eric Clapton. Attention then turned to Latin America, and a rhythmic account of Mary’s Boy Child, sang expertly by Rhianna Fahy. A jazz arrangement of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas was effortlessly delivered by Lucy Thompson, and then the mood completely changed again for a beautiful and flawless performance of O Holy Night from Georgia Johnson.

Another fantastic evening of music at Gateacre culminated in the whole theatre performing Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody, which has long been a tradition of these concerts.
