What a week for Reading!

Gateacre School and the BIG Little Library had a wonderful week of celebration last week.

As well as celebrating World Book Day on March 5th, the school also took part in Liverpool’s city-wide Readathon.

Over 320 students across year groups 7-9 took part in the event and were sponsored to read whatever they like over the course of a week – from comics to classics – with the emphasis on reading what they love.

The will receive 20% of whatever we raise to buy books for our library, with the rest supporting Liverpool Learning Partnership’s wider work establishing after-school reading for pleasure groups for vulnerable pupils and Read for Good’s unique programme bringing a regular supply of books and storytellers into all of the UK’s main children’s hospitals, including Alder Hey. If you would like to sponsor our students please visit https://readforgood.org/

During World Book Day the school library was transformed into a Roald Dahl wonderland with stalls hosted by Dept’s such as Drama, Art, English and Maths. Students were able to take books for free from our BIG little Library, create their own BFG Dream Jars and try and crack Matilda Maths!

The school also took part in Drop Everything and Read. 10 minutes during the say when all staff and students stopped what they were doing and read for 10 minutes.

Finally, our BIG Little Library celebrated it’s 4th year, now having given away over 93,000 books and welcoming over 74,000 customers.
