National under 19 Chess Tournament

Twelve Gateacre chess players entered a national under 19 tournament at Bolton Grammar School against six other schools playing some very tough competition including a number of England national team players.

After a rocky start losing all first round matches versus Manchester Grammar School, our A team beat St Thomas to win five matches and draw one. We then lost our third round games, being put off considerably by a strange tournament rule of "touch move touch take" with which we were not familiar but our opponents took advantage of at every opportunity - with the notable exception of Callum Rooney who won as his opponent timed out after missing numerous checkmate opportunities.

A steep learning curve for our first chess tournament, we will need to practice more strategy to take on the best! A great day was had by all.
