Across all year groups attendance has been pretty solid. Year 7 have stood out the most for good or better attendance, however Year 10 have also had a reasonable week as well.
It has been really pleasing so see the huge improvements with Year 11 as a whole with Thursday in particular a really well attended day.
It would be so nice as we travel towards Easter over the next 25 school days to have most days at or above 94%. It makes such a huge difference having good attendance.
Staying Safe Online
We live more and more in a digital world; Youtube, Facebook, Instagram are just some of the platforms available for us to interact with, share our thoughts, feelings and update the world with what we are having for dinner.
The online world is very much like the real world in that it is a reflection of the people that use it. Some of us may be able to remember the old ‘Stranger Danger’ TV adverts and lessons at primary school during the late 19070s or early 1980s. I remember a police man coming to school and telling us “do not get into strangers’ cars, don’t go with people who try to give you sweets - run home and tell mum or dad or run back into school and find your teacher”.
The same sentiments apply very much to the online world and with the greater use of smart phones especially, in relation to very recent media coverage about online challenges with a scary looking character popping up in videos. It is important as adults that we don’t simply focus on the current media panic about Momo, but that we actually have regard for how the online world works and how our children interact with it.
Would you just let your child go off to someone’s house who you have never met or spoken to their parents? I would argue you would not. With this being the case, would you be comfortable with your child having 300, 500, 1000, 4000 “friends” on Facebook, Snapchat, Youtube or Instagram? To me that creates an uncomfortable anxiety;:Who are these people? Where do they live? What are they talking about? Why would they want to be friends with a child? What are their intentions?
Some basic advice about creating a safe environment that you are able to control so your child can stay safe online:
- Ensure you know what your children can access online
- Ensure children understand the importance of not giving personal information to anyone they do not know
- Tell your children no-one has the right to make them do anything they do not want to do
- Use parental controls to keep children safe

You could decide that this weekend you are having an online-free 48 hours, switch off your broadband at the wall, turn off the 4G on all your phones and go and visit Sefton Park, take a stroll around the caves and waterfalls, maybe have a look at the statues and monuments, visit the Palm House and splash out on a drink and a cake at the Lakeside Café. As Bob Hoskins used to say in the old BT adverts “it’s good to talk” - maybe we all need to do a little more of that and a little less time spent online.
Year 11 exam countdown: 52 school days from 1st March until 14th June
I have said this already in a previous Newsflash, but the first BIG exam is GCSE Science Biology paper on Friday 14th June. Prior to the 14th June there are some smaller Option subject exams; Drama practical, music performance, food & cookery and art practical.
Essentially your child should now be preparing, revising using their revision guides, reading and answering past papers in order to help them achieve the very best outcomes they can.
If at any point you or your child begins to stress or worry about the GCSE exams we need to know so that we can help support them. Basically, all an exam is, is a piece of paper with some questions on it. There is no need to fear a piece of paper.
Being polite applies to visitors to school as well
Unfortunately, this week our reception staff had to deal with a difficult situation in which a visitor to the school became very aggressive; swearing, making threats, generally being quite horrible over quite a trivial matter – a child completing a detention.
School rules are in place because without firm boundaries it is very difficult to teach a class of 25+ children. Without a clear and accepted code of conduct it is even harder to ensure the running and good order of nearly 1000 young people in a large secondary school. Rules, sanctions and rewards are important.
I have had to take the regrettable step of banning the individual from the school site because I simply will not tolerate people being rude or aggressive to any member of my school staff. We are of course allowed to have a disagreement, but this must be discussed in a respectful and professional way.
Sixth Form Scholars - University of Liverpool
At Gateacre School we offer students the opportunity of applying for the University of Liverpool Scholars Programme, and we are delighted that seven of our Sixth Form students have been accepted onto the programme.
The University of Liverpool is committed to supporting talented students who wish to access Higher Education, regardless of background. The Liverpool Scholars programme does this by offering year 12 students the chance to take part in a range of activities aimed at supporting their entry into higher education and preparing them for university, such as application guidance masterclasses, lectures and academic key skills workshops. These activities are delivered in partnership with academics, undergraduates and the wider University, allowing them to experience university teaching and learning and to demonstrate their own academic ability and potential. Current undergraduate and postgraduate students are closely involved in the project, offering academic and general support throughout. Successfully completing the Scholars programme will enhance a student’s application to the University of Liverpool and offers a range of benefits. Through the Liverpool Scholars programme, we aim to nurture well informed, confident applicants who are well equipped for their University experience.
Whole school assessment week will start on Monday 4th March. Please ensure your child attends school every day and prepares well for the upcoming assessments, so they can achieve the best grades possible.
