Attendance Matters

Regular readers of the Newsflash will note that good school attendance and punctuality play very high on our school improvement agenda.  If the pupils are not in, they cannot learn.  Unfortunately, in all the schools I have worked in or with, in supporting those schools to be better, pupil attendance issues have featured far too many times.  Trying to gain as much parent and carer support in improving both custom and practice has time and again been the biggest hurdle to overcome.

The small amount of snow last week meant that, from Wednesday onwards, we were never above 90% for the rest of that week.  As the Headteacher of your child’s school, I find it really difficult to understand why someone would purposely want to disadvantage their child, make it harder for them to do well, cause more stress and anxiety by increasing the amount of time away from school.

We want every child to achieve their very best.  Every single pupil, and every adult in the building has the right to learn and work in a positive nurturing environment.  To try and take our work in improving attendance a stage further, we at Gateacre School are in the very embryonic stages of working with partner agencies, such as local GPs and the wider Liverpool NHS network, to try and help support families and children even more than we currently do.

Whilst the scores on the doors this week are an improvement on last week for nearly all year groups, we still have too many days where some year groups are below 94%.

A big well done to ……Year 9 with best attendance today and this week.

GCSE Countdown

Y11 Passport to Blackpool & Pizza Wednesdays

There are approximately 11 school weeks left until the summer exams in May.  In the lead-up towards the summer exam season, Y11 students can qualify for a FREE reward trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach by having 95% attendance, attending 30 before/after school revision sessions, including compulsory Maths revision with free pizza to keep them going on Wednesdays 3:10-4pm (Pizza Wednesdays) - starting next week.

Parents, please ask your child these questions:  Have you got your GCSE Pod login?  Which after school sessions are you doing this week (you’ve got to go to maths!)?  Is there anything I can help you with?  Are you ok?

Sports News

The year 7 Girls' Athletics Team took part in the Liverpool Schools Competition this week. Ten schools attended and our girls performed really well, competing against the best athletes in the city. Freya Annesley was an excellent Team Captain during the athletics competition and the girls did themselves and the school proud.

Word Of The Week

Week14 quantitative

Every week, as part of our literacy focus in school, to improve vocabulary and understanding, we feature a new word of the week. Parents can engage with this and help by using it at home and encouraging your child to use it within context.
