Newsflash 11/01/2019

Attendance this week has seen an improvement from the last week prior to the Christmas break.  Year 10 as a cohort have done exceptionally well, above national average for 4/5 days.

Every day is really important from Year 7 right through to Year 11, and right now we only have 14 school weeks before the start of the summer exams.

Parent Governor Opportunities

There are two Parent Governor vacancies on the governing body

This is an opportunity for parents to be involved in the work of the governing body and its core functions, to contribute any specific skills or experience that would be desirable in a new governor, helping the governing body to improve its effectiveness and address any specific challenges it may be facing. The role of parent governor is often an interesting and rewarding opportunity for parents to support the school and the governing body.

Effective governing bodies require expertise and experience in analysing performance data, in budgeting and driving financial efficiency, and in performance management and employment issues. All governors need a strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children, the inquisitiveness to question and analyse, and the willingness to learn. They need good inter-personal skills, appropriate levels of literacy in English and sufficient numeracy skills to understand data.  Nominations would be particularly welcome from parents who are able to demonstrate these qualities.

Parents interested in becoming a governor are invited to submit a nomination form by the deadline closing date 4pm 25th January 2019.  Details about the role and how to apply, together with Nomination Form and guidance, can be found on our website here:

Gateacre School at the BBC on Breakfast TV Today

Jason Roberts on breakfast TV 11.01.2019

Headteacher, Mr Roberts appeared on television this morning in BBC Breakfast

I was fortunate enough to be invited into the BBC Breakfast studio this morning to talk about the issues facing schools around funding, and how difficult it can be to turn a school around that is not only in Special Measures but also has budget issues.

School funding is very much a national issue which is highlighted in a report by the Education Policy Institute.  If you saw the interview this morning, I hope that you found it both honest and informative.

Since starting at Gateacre in September 2016, all I have tried to do, along with all my staff, is to give your child the very best possible education.  I, like many other Headteachers up and down the country would very much like to see the amount of funding given to schools increase significantly but, if we are too afraid to speak up about our worries, then nothing will change.

Word Of The Week

Every week, as part of our literacy focus in school, to improve vocabulary and understanding, we feature a new word of the week. Parents can engage with this and help by using it at home and encouraging your child to use it within context. Next week's word of the week is:
