Applied Curriculum

Welcome to the Applied Curriculum Department. All learners studying the Applied Curriculum at Gateacre access a varied programme of skills based qualifications. The programme runs for 12 lessons per week, providing learners the opportunity to develop exciting new skills that will enable them to progress onto further education and employment. Learners study a suite of accredited qualifications which together give an understanding of different vocational areas, develop skills to manage finances and enable learners look after themselves so that they lead a healthy life. Learners will also gain knowledge and learn vital skills in the ‘Visitor Economy’ - one of the employment growth areas in Merseyside.

The following qualifications are included in the course:

BTEC Level 1 Extended Certificate in Vocational Studies

The BTEC Level 1 Extended Certificate in Vocational studies is a 2 year course that consists of 2 core units and optional units. The qualification is equivalent to 2 level 1 qualifications

This qualification is designed to give learners the opportunity to:

  • experience more than one vocational sector
  • develop knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to progress to higher level qualifications or employment in a specific sector
  • develop cross cutting employability skills through carrying out practical activities in a vocational context
  • engage in learning which is relevant to them and will provide opportunities to develop skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life
  • 100% of assessment is carried out by the class teacher and checked by the exam board.

BTEC Home Cooking Skills - Level 2 Award

The aim of this qualification is to give every young person the basic skills and knowledge to be able to cook for themselves in a healthy and cost-effective way for the rest of their lives, and the confidence to share these skills with friends and family. This course is hugely engaging for learners of all cooking abilities. For some, it may be the start of a career in catering; for others, it will help them to learn the basic skills and recipes that will stand them in good stead throughout their lives.

Learners will learn how to:

  • plan nutritious home cooked meals using basic ingredients
  • prepare cook, present meals using basic ingredients
  • understand how to cook economically at home
  • pass on information about cooking meals from scratch

This is a level 2 qualification which gives the learner the equivalent of 0.5 GCSE.

BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Personal Social Development

This is an imaginative programme which allows learners to develop skills and confidence from a variety of areas including Sport & Leisure, Independent Living, The Environment, Health & Fitness, and Work Related Learning & Enterprise.

To achieve this qualification, learners will study a selection of units over a two year period including healthy living, rights and responsibilities and community based topics.
