ECHO SCHOOLS AWARD WINNERS 2018
Headteacher Of The Year
School In The Community
We were delighted to win two awards at the fifth annual Echo Schools Awards ceremony on Tuesday, hosted by Liverpool John Moores University and presented by Leanne Campbell of Radio City breakfast show.I was very surprised and delighted to be announced Headteacher Of The Year 2018 for which I am very proud but which is testament to all the support we have had from parents, staff and pupils together.
Gateacre School were also announced winner of the School In The Community Award for the Big Little Library collected by Lisa Mitchell, Community Co-ordinator and our students who volunteer and help organise the wonderful work we do in the BLL for the community. Our students are great ambassadors of Gateacre School and were a credit to us as always.
Gateacre School was shortlisted for two more awards; Secondary School Of The Year and our Year 11 Humanutopia students were also finalists for the Healthy Living Award.
Over thirty schools participate in these annual awards which recognise excellence in schools and all the great work that students, staff and schools do across the region.
Echo Regional Managing Director said: "Thankfully, here in the Liverpool city region, we are blessed with many brilliant schools and fantastic teachers."
ECHO editor-in-chief Alastair Machray said: "It is our genuine pleasure and privilege to honour the wonderful and crucial work that teachers, pupils and support staff are carrying out across our region to make education here so strong."
You can see the news story and pictures from the awards ceremony in the link below and there will be a full colour supplement in Tuesday's Echo.
Uniform - 2nd July 2018
Thank you for your support this week, the more relaxed approach to uniform appears to have helped with ensuring a more purposeful learning environment for all pupils.
On Monday 2nd July we return to ‘normal’, so our expectations are that all pupils will be wearing their full school uniform. Pupils must have their blazers and ties.
What if it is another very hot day?
I think we have demonstrated this week that we take a common sense approach to things, including possible effects of extreme heat on pupils and staff. Should it continue to be excessively hot, we will simply instruct all staff and pupils to adopt a warm weather uniform – the same as this week.
Please do continue to send your child in with water, some parents have given their children two water bottles. One bottle is frozen so that over the course of the day it melts and is able to cool them down. We do have water fountains available at all times and we are continually informing pupils that staying hydrated is important.
How does this information get to staff?
We all have access to emails with the possibility to email ‘All Staff’ and give out a global message such as “Please tell pupils they can remove blazers in the building due to the hot weather”.
Saddleworth Moor Fire
You may be aware that I live quite some distance from the school in a place called Saddleworth, my journey to and from Gateacre is roughly 100 miles each day. Unfortunately the moors caught fire this past weekend causing a lot of damage to the local area, to wildlife as well as putting people’s lives and homes at serious risk. Fortunately the Fire Service, Army and volunteers have worked incredibly hard to get the fire under control and prevent further losses.
I just wanted to share with you an image taken close to the main part of the fire which is not far from my house so that people can see how bad the fire was and how brave those that are still up on the moor have been.
Gateacre School is a proud member of the Leading Together programme.
Leading Together is a two-year programme supporting schools in areas of greatest need to build and sustain strong, empowered and effective senior leadership teams. The programme – designed and delivered by Teach First - is unique in the education sector with its bespoke support for a school's entire senior leadership team over a sustained period. The programme works to support a school’s own improvement journey by building leadership capacity across the team and beyond. The programme helps schools create a culture and environment in which all teachers and pupils can thrive.

Girls Cricket Team
Our Year 7 and Year 8 girls' cricket teams had a splendid day taking part in a cricket tournament this week and were a credit to the school. Jamie Jopson from year 8 and Faye Hill from Year 7 captained their teams very well and were commended for their effort, contribution, leadership and sportsmanship in the cricket tournament. Both girls were identified as having a talent for cricket. Jamie's leadership skills were second to none and as the cricket captain she was so encouraging to the other members of the team. Faye Hill, captain of the year 7 team, organised the team, had the players ready in their positions before the umpires got there to start the game and was so encouraging to the other girls.
The tournament organisers were impressed with our Gateacre girls and wrote to thank us saying: "a massive thank you to you, Gateacre School and your party of girls for contributing so much to the success of the Softball Cricket Festival on Wednesday at Old Xavs CC. Your girls acquitted themselves very well on the field, but equally well off it with impeccable conduct and displaying very good listening skills. I hope we can build on the positive partnership we have forged in the last few weeks both within school where opportunities allow, and more immediately with a home for girls who wish to pursue the sport, additionally, at our club."
