A Positive Start: What Our Current Year 7s Say About Life at Gateacre School

Transitioning from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone in a young person’s educational journey, and it is natural for both students and parents to have some concerns. At Gateacre School, we are committed to ensuring that this transition is a positive and enriching experience. To offer genuine insight into what life is like for our new students, we have gathered feedback from our current Year 7 cohort - and their reflections speak volumes.

Settling In: From Initial Concerns to Confidence

Many of our Year 7 students began their time at Gateacre with understandable worries - concerns about finding their way around a larger school, making new friends, or adapting to new routines and expectations. However, these anxieties were consistently overcome within the first few weeks.

“I was worried about getting lost, but it’s easy to find your way around.”

“Before I got here, I was worried I’d lose my friends. But I made new ones quickly - and they’re amazing.”

“I thought I wouldn’t fit in, but I’ve now found people who really understand me.”

Friendship and Belonging

A recurring theme in the feedback we received was the ease with which students were able to form new friendships. Whether they joined Gateacre with friends from primary school or came on their own, students described a welcoming and inclusive environment.

“I was worried about finding friends, as none of my primary friends came to Gateacre with me. It took me a while, but I found people I really connect with - and now I feel so happy.”

“When Year 7 started, I only knew six people. Now, I have loads of friends.”

Engaging Learning Opportunities

Our Year 7 students have expressed a strong appreciation for the academic and extracurricular opportunities available to them. Many have highlighted their enjoyment of subjects that were new to them, such as science, Spanish, food technology, and design technology.

“Science wasn’t something I did at primary school, but I really enjoyed it.”

“I love languages - I can now say my name in Latin!”

“There are so many opportunities - clubs, trips, rewards, and new subjects.”

Supportive Staff and a Nurturing Environment

Students repeatedly praised the supportiveness of staff and the welcoming atmosphere across the school. The relationships they have built with both teachers and peers have played a key role in their successful transition.

“I’ve found amazing teachers who are really kind.”

“I’ve learned that it’s okay not to rely solely on old friends - everyone here is really friendly.”

Looking Ahead with Optimism

As our current Year 7 students reflect on their experiences, the consensus is overwhelmingly positive. The early concerns they had have largely faded, replaced by confidence, enthusiasm, and a sense of belonging.

“Year 7 has been very good - new friends, new opportunities, and better food too!”

“I’ve figured out who I am.”

“My worries didn’t last long - everything worked out.”

A Message to Future Families

The transition to secondary school is a journey of growth and discovery. At Gateacre School, we take pride in creating an environment where students feel safe, supported, and inspired to achieve their best. The reflections of our current Year 7s demonstrate our ongoing commitment to making every child’s first year a positive and memorable one.

We look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 cohort in September 2025, and to supporting every student as they begin their Gateacre journey with confidence.
