From the 1st to the 4th of July, 36 KS3 pupils embarked on an unforgettable educational visit to the Bay of Naples, immersing themselves in the history, archaeology and culture of southern Italy. The visit brought classroom learning to life, providing pupils with first-hand experiences of some of the most significant sites of the ancient world.

Where is the Bay of Naples?

The Bay of Naples, is a roughly 15-kilometer-wide coastline along the Tyrrhenian Sea, which entirely faces the City of Naples. It opens to the west into the Mediterranean Sea. Click here to learn more.

Throughout the four-day visit, pupils explored the remarkably preserved cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, where they walked the streets of ancient Roman settlements and gained a deeper understanding of the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. They also visited the magnificent Greek temples at Paestum, broadening their understanding of the ancient Mediterranean world and the relationship between Greek and Roman civilisation.

The experience extended beyond the archaeological sites. A guided walking tour of Naples introduced pupils to the city's rich history and vibrant culture, while a visit to a traditional working farm gave everyone the opportunity to make authentic Neapolitan pizza, providing a memorable insight into local traditions and cuisine. Time spent exploring the beautiful coastal town of Sorrento completed a programme that balanced academic enrichment with cultural experiences.

The impact of the visit was evident in pupils' reflections. One Year 8 pupil commented, "My favourite activity was the pizza making as it was really entertaining and fun. I learned that Herculaneum was buried under mud, unlike Pompeii." Another shared, "I really enjoyed making pizza with friends and seeing Herculaneum because it was so well preserved."

Parents were equally enthusiastic about the experience. One wrote, "The trip to Naples was one of the best experiences for my son. It was fun, educational and he learnt so much." Another reflected, "Trips like this are remembered long after they finish. They provide experiences that simply can't be recreated in the classroom."

Most importantly, our pupils were exceptional ambassadors for Gateacre School throughout the visit. They embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, curiosity and maturity, demonstrating exemplary behaviour and earning praise wherever they went. Their positive attitude, respect for the places they visited and willingness to engage with new experiences made us incredibly proud, and they represented the school impeccably throughout this enriching educational journey.
