Gateacre School holds a unique place in Liverpool's history as the city's very first comprehensive school, built in 1957 and 1961 by the architects Weightman and Bullen, and George Whitfield. The original 'Main Building' was an innovative design for its time. Over the years, while the physical campus remained a constant, the school’s ambition continued to grow. This led to a significant moment in our history: the relocation to a new, purpose-built site in Belle Vale in 2011.
This move was a direct result of the government's 'Building Schools for the Future' scheme, necessitated by the unique nature of our old site's playing fields, which had been levelled using a method that made the land unsuitable for further construction. The new £35 million building, now easily identified opposite the Belle Vale Shopping Centre, was designed to be state-of-the-art. It features a 300-seater theatre, a music recording studio, a sports hall and a fitness suite, providing a modern and dynamic learning environment that honours our rich past while looking firmly to the future.
