OFSTED REPORT - JUNE 2026
Gateacre School has undergone a period of substantial transformation, with the report recognising the significant and meaningful progress achieved since joining Northern Schools Trust. We welcome the inspectors' feedback as a valuable benchmark on our continuous journey of improvement.
Below we have compiled key highlights from the report.
Key Highlights Recognised by Ofsted
- Fully Met Safeguarding Standards: Safeguarding standards are fully met, supported by an open and proactive culture where student safety is prioritised.
- Calm, Safe, and Orderly: Day-to-day experiences reflect a school that is safer, calmer, and more orderly than in the past. Clear morning entry and uniform routines set a positive tone for every day.
- Positive Behaviour & Values: Behaviour across the school is respectful and polite, with learning taking place without disruption. Bullying is infrequent, and staff deal with any concerns promptly and effectively.
- Pastoral Care & Transition Support: Highlighted as a notable strength, featuring warm, supportive staff-pupil relationships and dedicated wellbeing spaces. Year 7 pupils benefit from a structured peer mentor and "buddy group" system with Year 8 students, helping them build confidence early on. Targeted, nurturing support also helps build individual pupil resilience.
- Sixth Form Provision (Expected Standard): Having previously been rated as inadequate and a serious cause for concern, our Sixth Form now meets the Expected Standard. Inspectors highlighted how structured academic and vocational pathways now match students' ambitions, supported by strong pastoral care and clear preparation for higher education, apprenticeships, or employment.
- Broad Curriculum & Enrichment: Leaders have designed an ambitious curriculum. Beyond standard lessons, pupils access rich experiences through the Gateacre Leadership Foundations (Citizens, Creatives, Futures, and Sports), clubs such as debating, educational trips, Cadets, and the Scholars' Pathway.
- Targeted Reading Support: Effective phonics and targeted reading support are firmly in place to assist pupils at the earliest stages of reading and those learning English as an additional language.
- Careers & Future Destinations: Careers education is effective, featuring meaningful employer encounters, work experience, and impartial guidance. More pupils are successfully moving on to further education, training, or ambitious post-16 pathways after Year 11.
Looking Ahead & Continued Progress: The report also outlines areas where we must continue to focus - specifically, ensuring consistent curriculum delivery across all subjects, further raising of expectations, improving student attendance, and refining how we evaluate our strategies to maximise their impact. Our leadership team and staff have already started work to address these areas.
Looking ahead, we will continue to develop award-winning Classics programme, our expanding Cadets unit, and the introduction of new sports opportunities such as rugby and cricket.
