It has been a busy and inspiring Spring Term at Gateacre School, with students across all year groups embracing a wide range of opportunities both inside and beyond the classroom. From academic enrichment and leadership experiences to university visits, our students have continued to demonstrate curiosity, ambition and a commitment to excellence.
PhD Insights with Dr Phillips
Our Year 12 scientists were fascinated by a talk from Dr Phillips, who shared his PhD research into bio-derived anti-adhesive protein surfaces.
Students explored how bacterial proteins can be used to prevent harmful bacteria from sticking to surfaces, gaining insight into innovative scientific solutions with real-world applications. The session also provided valuable guidance on the purpose, structure and importance of PhD study, as well as the key skills needed to succeed in scientific research.

Cancer Trials Workshop with University of Liverpool
Year 12 students took part in an interactive workshop focused on cancer clinical trials, delivered by a Biological and Medical Sciences Student from the University of Liverpool. Students were challenged to design their own approaches to treating pancreatic cancer, working collaboratively to develop testing methods, debate ideas and present their findings. Our partner highlighted how quickly students developed confidence in discussing complex scientific concepts, demonstrating impressive creativity, critical thinking and communication skills.

Northern Gritstone Visit
We were pleased to welcome representatives from Northern Gritstone, who delivered an engaging session to our sixth form students on investment and enterprise. Students explored the concept of “profit with purpose,” worked through a real-world case study and asked thoughtful questions throughout. The visiting team praised the students’ enthusiasm and engagement, noting their potential as future innovators and investors.
Aspire Programme Trip to Oxford
Students had the opportunity to visit St Peter’s College, Oxford, as part of the Aspire Programme. This transformative experience allowed them to explore university life, engage with academic sessions and raise their aspirations for the future. Opportunities like this play a vital role in showing our students that pathways to leading universities are within reach.
Unilever Inspire Programme Final at All About Futures
A group of Gateacre students represented the school at the Unilever Inspire Programme Final, hosted by All About STEM. Presenting their product to a panel of expert judges, they spoke confidently about key themes including sustainability, inclusion and accessibility. Their hard work and teamwork were recognised with the CREST Discovery Award, a fantastic achievement that reflects their innovation and dedication.

Cambridge Chemistry Challenge Preparation
Our Year 12 chemists have begun training for the prestigious Cambridge Chemistry Challenge. This competition pushes students beyond the A-level curriculum, encouraging them to apply advanced problem-solving, logic and analytical skills to complex scientific questions. We look forward to seeing how they rise to this exciting academic challenge.
STEM Leadership with Roscoe Primary School
During Science Week, our Year 12 students demonstrated outstanding leadership by delivering an engineering challenge for Year 5 pupils from Roscoe Primary School. Acting as mentors, they supported younger students in designing and building structures while developing teamwork and problem-solving skills. The day was a great success, with all visiting pupils earning their CREST Discovery Award and our students gaining valuable leadership experience working towards their STEM Leadership qualification.
Achievement Assemblies
The term concluded with our achievement assemblies, celebrating the successes of students across all year groups. Awards were presented for excellence in subject areas, as well as most improved attendance and behaviour. These assemblies recognised the dedication, resilience and positive attitudes that our students demonstrate every day.

Looking Ahead
As we move into the summer term, we are excited to continue building on this momentum and providing opportunities that inspire, challenge and empower our students. We are incredibly proud of all that has been achieved this term and look forward to even more success in the months ahead.
