Boat of Hope

Schools understand better than anyone how difficult the last year has been for young people and the impact it has had on their mental health and wellbeing.

In response, serial fundraiser and adventurer Bernie Hollywood OBE JP, has pledged to take on the unimaginable: rowing the Atlantic Ocean, alone, to raise awareness and vital funds to help tackle the mental health challenges that young people face.

Gateacre School recently entered a number of pieces of students artwork into a national competition. The winning artwork was to be featured as part of a larger mural piece which will cover the boat, unveiled in London at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

Looking for the most inspiring and thoughtful creations, the judging panel included renowned artist and illustrator Justin Eagleton, who has incorporated the 6 winning entries into a stunning mural he is currently creating.

Out of the 100’s of entries received from across the UK, 6 student pieces have been chosen to be added to the boat, 2 of which by former Gateacre students, Abbie Benstead and Kirstie Robins.

The Boat of Hope is part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge – an astounding solo row of 3,000 nautical miles across the Atlantic Ocean – in support of mental health charity Samaritans and is sponsored by ParentPay. This boat will be the only one in the race with artwork and racing to bring awareness to children’s mental health.

The race itself will begin in Dec 2022, but the build up has begun with the unveiling of the boat and with a naming ceremony of the boat at the Maritime Museum in Liverpool at the end of October.
