Enrichment
The culture of enrichment beyond the formal curriculum aims to broaden horizons for students and is integrated into all aspects of school life.
A considerable emphasis is placed on community links, charity work and the development of student leadership. This has included raising funds for Children in Need, Comic Relief and Oxfam and local charities such as the Whitechapel Centre, Marie Curie Hospice and the Pyjama Party Liverpool. The school competes in a wide variety of external competitions such as Dot-Art Schools and UKMT United Kingdom Mathematics Trust. Our school has a long and successful tradition of involvement in: Sport, Music, Drama, Outdoor Activities and the Arts at a local, regional and national level.
There are many excellent societies and clubs which include: choir, orchestra, drama productions, football, netball, rugby, cookery, graphics and astronomy to name but a few.
The school’s most recent trips to all over the world have included:
- Art trip to New York
- History trip to Poland
- Modern Foreign Languages trip to France
- Physics trip to Switzerland
- An upcoming Geography trip to Iceland.
Liverpool Cultural Education Partnership (LCEP)
Gateacre School is part of the Liverpool Cultural Education Partnership (LCEP). This was set up to increase opportunities for children and young people across our region to take part in quality art and cultural experiences. The LCEP has developed Culturepool.org where you can search for cultural education resources, activities and experiences for children and young people, as well as CPD opportunities for staff.

Duke of Edinburgh Award
Many young people find achieving a DofE Award life-changing. A fun adventure and major challenge, three progressive Award levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold) and a wide range of activities offer endless possibilities to anyone aged 14 to 24. Millions of young people in the UK have already taken part in the world’s leading youth achievement award – pushing personal boundaries, gaining new skills and enhancing their CVs and university applications. The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is open for students from Year 10 upwards.

World Challenge
Students in Year 12 are invited to go on a World Challenge expedition. In 2014 went on an expedition to Malaysia for 2 weeks. 2016 students headed to Thailand and Cambodia for 33 days, and in 2018 over 25 students headed off to Swaziland and Mozambique.
World Challenge expeditions are designed to develop important life skills, helping students to:
- Hone teamwork and leadership skills
- Gain confidence and self-esteem
- Become more globally aware
- Enhance employment prospects

6th Form Enrichment programme
Sixth Form students at Gateacre are expected to do more than study. We encourage students to become involved in the wider social life of the school and we regard social and personal development as important aspects of Post Sixteen education.
All students in Year 12 will choose from a range of enrichment activities, which they must participate in for at least one lesson a week.
Each year Gateacre School applies to MBSSS to receive the full award for which it is eligible on behalf of deserving students on the recommendation of The Headteacher. The prize amount awarded to students across a range of disciplines is at the Headteacher's discretion.
The aim of the Margaret Bryce Smith School Scholarships is to further the education of pupils attending any secondary school in the City of Liverpool by the award of prizes or other suitable reward as a mark of distinction.
In 1908, James Smith a local Wine Merchant bequeathed a sum of money in memory of his late mother, Margaret Bryce Smith to make annual awards of scholarships to Liverpool secondary school children. The awards to be known as The Margaret Bryce Smith School Scholarships in her honour.
For many years the Corporate Trustees were Liverpool City Council, but in August 2002 a scheme drawn up by the Charity Commissioner came into effect amalgamating the main fund with a number of small associated scholarship funds. The scheme superseded the original trusts of the charities and henceforth the charity is to be administered as one fund.
Since 2005, grants have been awarded to secondary pupils attending Liverpool schools.
Grant awards received annually from MBSS are awarded to deserving students who each receive a prize scholarship award amount to further their educational career and mark of distinction rewards. MBSSS prize fund is awarded individually to nominated students on recommendation of the Headteacher only.
MBSS grant allocation to Gateacre School will be awarded to deserving students by the Headteacher at his discretion during an Awards Ceremony to be held in January 2022.
Trustees of the MBSS are invited to attend all awards ceremonies at their convenience.
